The Lantern Walk will be held Sunday, Nov 11. Gather at the Clifton Rec Center parking lot at 5:30pm where there will be baked goods and warm & cold drinks for sale by CTM. At 6:15pm, the Fairview-Clifton German Language School Choir will perform. As sunset approaches around 6:30pm, everyone will “light” their battery-operated light inside a paper lantern and join a procession from Clifton Recreation Center to McAlpin to Middleton to Lafayette to Cincinnati Women’s Club and back (1.2 miles). The walk will start at approx 6:30 pm and end by approx 7:30 pm. Streets will be closed so wagons, strollers, scooters, etc. are welcome. You can bring your own homemade or purchased lantern.
This event happens as noted above if it does not rain. If it rains, the event will move indoors to the Clifton Rec Center.
The Lantern Walk is a European tradition first brought to Clifton in 2001 by Connie Matzkofz. Connie had fond memories of the tradition from her own childhood in Germany and wanted to give Clifton children a chance to experience the same joy. Why the paper lanterns? The Lantern Walk occurs on or near the European holiday of Saint Martin’s Day on November 11. It was inspired by the old story that children carried lanterns on a very dark night as they searched for and found Saint Martin’s lost donkey.
